Covid-19 Task Force Read Riot Act on Rusape

GOVERNMENT has read the riot act at the Rusape Town Council for failing to upgrade informal traders’ market stalls, saying the facilities are a breeding ground for Covid-19 and other communicable diseases.
Ramshackle market stalls at the Hotdogs Bus Terminus and Evergreen courted the wrath of the Covid-19 inter-ministerial taskforce that toured the town last weekend to assess its state of preparedness in light of the global pandemic.
Although the market stalls are a major source of income for the local authority, they have not been renovated for decades.
Vice chairperson of the inter-ministerial taskforce on Covid-19, who is also Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri did not mince her words while talking to Town Secretary, Mr Solomon Gabaza.
The inter-ministerial taskforce was also not happy with the state of affairs at the council clinic in Vengere and recommended that it be renovated.
Said Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri, “This is totally unacceptable. What I am seeing is unacceptable 40 years after independence. These market stalls are too old and disorganised. Why can’t you construct proper structures for informal traders to operate from?
“No, we cannot allow this. And look, there is a restaurant close to the public toilet’s entrance. Are you serious? Surely we can’t allow this kind of disorder. This is embarrassing to say the least.”
The minister advised the council bosses to respect the people they serve, adding that they should emulate what other towns are doing.
“Research and emulate what other towns in neighbouring countries are doing for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). We have bright young people who can assist in designing and constructing proper structures.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba, also expressed concern over the SMEs’ operating environment.
“We are not happy with the state of Rusape’s vending markets. The inter-ministerial team has agreed that the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works should intervene and assist council in constructing better structures in line with our call for mordenisation,” said Dr Gwaradzimba.
SMEs play a crucial role in driving the country’s economy.
